People searching for a 303 VST are not always looking for the same thing. Some want a strict 303 emulator that reproduces one vintage instrument as closely as possible. Others want the immediacy of acid sequencing in a broader acid groovebox with drums, distortion, performance controls and deeper sound design.
CreakBox V2 is built for the second group. It can move into familiar 303-style territory, but it is intentionally not a one-to-one clone. It combines a circuit-modelled monophonic bass voice, independent bass and drum sequencers, seven synthesized drum voices, four distortion models, tape processing, tape echo and a deep Circuit Bend system in one Windows VST3 instrument.

What is CreakBox V2?
CreakBox V2 is a sample-free bass-and-drum groove instrument for electronic music production. It combines a monophonic acid-oriented bass voice, step sequencing, synthesized drums, nonlinear filters, distortion, tape processing and performance tools inside one plug-in.
It can follow a DAW, run from its own clock, play the bass voice from MIDI or process an external stereo signal. This makes it useful both as an immediate pattern machine and as a deeper sound-design instrument.
Is CreakBox V2 a 303 VST?
Yes, in the practical sense in which producers use the term 303 VST: it is a VST3 instrument designed around resonant acid basslines, saw and square waveforms, Slide, Accent, sequencing and hands-on filter movement.
The more precise description is a modern 303-style VST and acid groovebox. CreakBox V2 includes the musical behaviours associated with classic acid bass, but expands them with multiple voice models, a sub oscillator, synthesized drums, effects, external processing and Circuit Bend controls.
Is CreakBox V2 a TB-303 emulator?
CreakBox V2 is not intended to be a strict one-to-one 303 emulator. It does not limit itself to reproducing one fixed piece of vintage hardware or one front panel.
Instead, it models and develops the interactions that make acid basslines feel alive: oscillator behaviour, filter feedback, envelope movement, Slide, Accent, timing, nonlinear drive and gain staging. A strict emulator is the better choice when exact historical reproduction is the only objective. CreakBox V2 is the better fit when the original acid workflow is the starting point rather than the limit.
What is the difference between a 303 VST and a 303 emulator?
A 303 VST is a broad search term for a plug-in used to create 303-style acid basslines. A 303 emulator usually makes a narrower promise: to reproduce the sound, control response and sequencing behaviour of the original hardware as closely as possible.
Not every 303 VST is therefore a strict emulator. CreakBox V2 belongs to the broader category because it can create familiar acid behaviour while deliberately adding functions and sound paths that go beyond the original machine.
Is CreakBox V2 the best 303 VST for me?
That depends on the result you want.
Choose a strict 303 emulator when your main criterion is the closest possible reproduction of one vintage instrument. Choose CreakBox V2 when you want to build a complete acid idea inside one plug-in, combine bass and synthesized drums, use several filter characters, add internal distortion and tape effects, experiment with circuit behaviour and route the elements separately in your DAW.

How close can CreakBox V2 get to a classic 303 sound?
CreakBox V2 contains the core ingredients producers associate with classic acid bass: saw and square sources, resonant filtering, short and long envelope movement, per-step Accent, Slide and pattern-based sequencing. It can therefore reach recognisable 303-style territory.
However, it is designed to remain flexible rather than force every setting into a single historical response. Filter model, circuit profile, oscillator choice, Accent calibration, distortion and gain staging can all move the result from familiar acid squelch to sounds that are deliberately less conventional.
Why is CreakBox V2 described as an acid groovebox?
An acid groovebox should do more than generate a bass tone. It should let you create, develop and perform a complete rhythmic idea without assembling a long chain of unrelated plug-ins.
CreakBox V2 combines bass patterns, drum patterns, sound generation, pattern variation, live controls, distortion, tape processing, echo and separate outputs inside one instrument. Bass and drum patterns can also use different lengths, allowing simple loops to develop into evolving or polyrhythmic grooves.
Can I use CreakBox V2 only as a bass synth?
Yes. CB-DRUM can be switched off, and the dedicated CB-BASS stereo output can be routed to its own DAW channel. You can use the internal bass sequencer, play the bass voice from MIDI or use CreakBox V2 as a nonlinear processor for an external signal.
The integrated drums are an option, not a requirement.
Bass engine, sequencing and acid workflow
Does CreakBox V2 have a built-in acid sequencer?
Yes. CreakBox V2 contains four bass patterns. Each pattern stores up to 16 steps and can use an active loop length from 1 to 16.
Each step can contain a chromatic note, Gate, Accent, Slide and Attack information. Editing tools include Randomize, Clean, Transpose, Rotate, Copy, Paste and four-pattern bank load/save. Shortening a pattern does not erase the hidden steps, so extending it later can reveal the previous material again.
How do Slide, Accent and Attack work?
Slide glides the pitch into the following note according to the current circuit behaviour. Because Slide is part of the sequencer logic, it interacts with Gate timing and neighbouring notes rather than acting like a generic portamento control.
Accent feeds separate filter-sweep and amplifier-punch paths. An accented step can therefore become brighter, louder and more aggressive at the same time.
Attack activates an additional filter-envelope opening contour for selected pattern steps. It is not a volume fade and does not simply soften every note.
Can I play CreakBox V2 from MIDI?
Yes. In MIDI mode, incoming notes control pitch and Gate. Velocity and overlapping notes can create Accent and Slide according to the active Circuit Bend settings.
The drum sequencer remains available while the bass is being played from MIDI, so you can perform the bass manually over an internal rhythm.
Does CreakBox V2 sync to my DAW?
Yes. HOST mode follows the DAW transport, tempo, looping and song position. FREE mode uses CreakBox V2’s internal BPM and local Play/Stop controls.
The sequencer supports straight and triplet step subdivision. Pattern changes are normally queued until a musically safe loop boundary rather than cutting the current pattern in the middle.
Can bass and drum patterns have different lengths?
Yes. Bass and drum patterns each have their own active length from 1 to 16 steps and wrap independently.
For example, a 15-step bass pattern can run against a 16-step drum pattern, causing the relationship between them to shift over time. This is useful for evolving grooves, phase movement and controlled variation without adding more notes.
What are FLT1, FLT2 and FLT3?
They are three different bass voice choices rather than three identical filters with slightly different EQ curves.
FLT1 is the efficient four-stage nonlinear voice, designed for strong resonance and lower CPU use.
FLT2 uses a two-stage 12 dB response with a different feedback topology, saturation behaviour and self-oscillation character.
FLT3 switches a more deeply coupled voice system, including its own oscillator behaviour, waveform conversion, nonlinear filter, resonance path and dedicated Accent behaviour.
FLT3 is the most computationally demanding and can change more than the filter tone alone.
Can CreakBox V2 generate bassline and groove ideas?
Yes. RANDOMIZE creates a new version of the selected bass pattern, while IDEA generates a coordinated bass-and-drum scene and establishes a practical starting balance between the two machines.
These commands replace current pattern material, so patterns worth keeping should be copied or saved first. The intention is to accelerate exploration, not to remove the producer’s role in selecting, editing and performing the result.
Can CreakBox V2 be automated and recalled in a DAW project?
Yes. Sound controls, switches, model choices, pattern selections, drum-bank selections and mapped Circuit Bend controls use stable VST3 parameter identities where automation is defined.
The DAW project stores the current musical state and the active bass and drum pattern memories. Reusable bass pattern banks, drum pattern banks and circuit personalities can also be saved as separate file types.
Why can CreakBox V2 use more CPU than a simple 303 plug-in?
CreakBox V2 continuously calculates oscillators, envelopes, Slide, Accent, nonlinear feedback, output stages, distortion, tape memory, echo modulation and seven synthesized drum voices. FLT3 solves interacting nonlinear circuit behaviour repeatedly for every audio sample, and oversampling multiplies the amount of work.
For recording or live use, start with 1x or 2x oversampling and use FLT1 or FLT2 when CPU headroom matters. The registered Full version uses its fixed high-quality path for offline rendering, independently of the lower live setting.
Drums, effects, routing and Circuit Bend
Are the drums samples?
No. The internal drum sounds are synthesized in real time. They are created from oscillators, generated noise, resonators, envelopes, filters, nonlinear amplifier behaviour and shared output stages.
Because the voices retain internal state, a new hit can interact with an existing ring or tail instead of replaying the same recorded sample every time.
Which drum voices are included?
CB-DRUM contains seven synthesized voices:

Closed hi-hat
An additional Accent lane changes the energy of drum hits placed on the same step. The closed hi-hat can choke the currently ringing open hi-hat in the synthesis state.
Is CreakBox V2 also an 808 or 909 emulator?
No. Just as CreakBox V2 is not a strict one-to-one 303 emulator, its drum section is not presented as an exact clone of one named drum machine.
The voices use analogue-inspired synthesis principles and provide direct Level, Tone and Decay control, but the objective is an integrated acid rhythm section rather than forensic reproduction of a single historical unit.
Which effects are built in?
CreakBox V2 includes four distortion models, a nonlinear output and clipping path, magnetic tape-style compression with hysteresis, bass and drum high-pass filtering and a tempo-aware tape echo.
The echo includes free or BPM-locked time, feedback, high-pass filtering, ducking, wow, flutter, stereo spread and Dry/Wet control. These stages are part of the instrument’s gain structure, so changing bass level, resonance or Accent can alter how later effects respond.
Can bass and drums be routed to separate DAW channels?
Yes. The plug-in exposes three stereo outputs:

CB-BASS Out
CB-DRUM Out
The Main output follows the bass/drum performance crossfader. The two dedicated stems retain their independent levels, allowing separate EQ, compression, effects, recording and metering inside the DAW. The host must activate the additional output buses before they can be used.
Can CreakBox V2 process external audio?
Yes. An optional stereo sidechain input can replace the internal bass source. The external signal can then pass through the selected bass filter and downstream processing, including nonlinear coloration, distortion, high-pass filtering, echo, tape compression and clipping.
This turns CreakBox V2 into an experimental stereo effect as well as an acid groovebox. Sidechain setup depends on the routing system in the host DAW.
What is Circuit Bend?
Circuit Bend is the deep calibration and sound-design layer in CreakBox V2. It exposes parameters related to oscillator edges, pitch and Gate behaviour, envelope timing, filter response, Accent, output stages, distortion, tape, echo and drum synthesis.
Parameters can be assigned directly to eight Quick controls for performance and automation. Complete circuit personalities can be saved and recalled separately from pattern banks.
Circuit Bend is intentionally capable of extreme settings. Lower the monitoring level before exploring unfamiliar ranges, save useful configurations under a new name and use KILL if a setting creates unexpected sustained output.
Compatibility, demo and licensing
Which operating systems and plug-in formats are supported?
CreakBox V2 is currently provided as a 64-bit VST3 plug-in for Windows 10 and Windows 11. A compatible 64-bit Windows DAW with VST3 support is required.
Using the optional stereo input or the dedicated bass and drum outputs also requires a DAW that can activate and route those buses.
Is CreakBox V2 available for macOS?
The current CreakBox V2 release is for 64-bit Windows. The original CreakBox Bassline 1.0 was released for both Windows and Mac in 2003, but CreakBox V2 is a new codebase and the current product page does not list a macOS version.
Is there a free CreakBox V2 demo?
Yes. The free demo allows normal real-time evaluation of the core bass voice, all three voice models, drum synthesis, pattern editing, MIDI input, effects, external stereo processing, monitoring, automation playback and separate outputs.
The real-time demo does not add periodic noise, forced pitch changes or deliberately degraded oscillator sound.
What are the demo limitations?
Until a valid Full license is active:
Live oversampling is limited to 1x or 2x.
Offline export, bounce, freeze and host prefetch processing are silent when the host declares them as offline processing.
The Circuit Bend page and external circuit-file workflow are unavailable.
Existing project data, patterns and ordinary real-time playback remain available.
A dedicated Preview build remains a preview. Activation is performed in the Full plug-in build.
Can CreakBox V2 be activated on an offline computer?
Yes. The normal purchase provides an online license key. After purchase, a signed offline license file can be requested from reitzwerk and imported through the CB-LICENSE page.
When both authorization methods are available, the verified offline license takes priority. License verification and activation work are kept outside the real-time audio callback.
Will my patterns and settings survive activation changes?
Yes. License status is separate from normal project data. Pattern cells, sound parameters and project state are not deleted when an entitlement is added, removed or temporarily unavailable.
After successful activation, Full-only functions become available without changing the plug-in’s parameter identities or detaching existing DAW automation.
From the original CreakBox to CreakBox V2
How is CreakBox V2 related to the original CreakBox?
Both instruments were created by Frank Reitz (BioRoid programmed original CreakBox vst and gui functionality) and share the same central idea: make pattern-driven acid bass immediate, then treat oscillator, filter, envelope, sequencer, Slide, Accent and nonlinear response as one interacting musical system.
CreakBox V2 preserves that philosophy and the direct create-a-pattern-and-shape-it workflow. It expands the concept with modern circuit modelling, multiple bass voices, per-step Attack, synthesized drums, advanced effects, external audio processing and Circuit Bend.
When was the original CreakBox released?
CreakBox Bassline 1.0 was released in October 2003 for Windows and Mac under the Bioroid name. It combined square and sawtooth oscillators, resonant filtering, Accent, Slide and a built-in step sequencer.
The early project used the development names Silverbox and CB303 before becoming CreakBox Bassline.
What was “Do You Want A TB303?”
“Do You Want A TB303?” was the website Frank Reitz created around the turn of the millennium. He wanted a TB-303, could not afford one and decided to gather technical information in order to program an instrument from scratch and return the result to the community for free.
The project became his introduction to digital signal processing, oscillator design and digital filters. In June 2000, the standalone site’s material was moved into the collaborative TB-303.org resource.
Is CreakBox V2 a port of the original CreakBox?
No. CreakBox V2 is not a port, skin, graphical update or repackaging of the 2003 code. It was rebuilt from the ground up for modern 64-bit Windows production environments under the reitzwerk name.
The relationship is conceptual and creative rather than a simple continuation of the old codebase.
What happened to the original CreakBox source code?
When active development of the original Bioroid plug-ins ended in 2004, the CreakBox source code was made publicly available so others could continue it or use it as a learning resource.
That source-released afterlife belongs to the original CreakBox. CreakBox V2 is a separate modern rebuild.
Was the later “Bad Boys” edition made by Frank Reitz?
No. An extended Bad Boys edition appeared after the original source release and added functions such as delay, additional distortion types and filter modes. It was created by others and was not an official Frank Reitz or reitzwerk development.
What has remained unchanged from the original idea?
The guiding principle is still that a convincing instrument comes from the interaction between its systems, not from copying a front panel or matching a checklist of specifications.
The original CreakBox made it possible to create a pattern, start the sequencer and shape the sound immediately. CreakBox V2 keeps that direct relationship between pattern and sound while opening the internal behaviour to far deeper control.
