Find yourIDEA.
Catch a groove.
Keep its character.
Follow it somewhere new.
IDEA is a place to explore basslines with a memory. Generate a starting point, protect the details that make it work, and grow a family of alternatives. Listen in your track. Then bring the version you love into the instrument.
This IDEA manual shows how to generate, lock, develop and audition acid basslines in CreakBox, which includes a free 303 VST edition for Windows. Unlike a strict TB-303 emulator, CreakBox expands classic 303-style sequencing with creative variations, pattern locks and deeper sound design.

Find a spark
Create a new idea or capture the bassline already playing.
Keep the hook
Protect a whole pattern, a sound, one note or one small detail.
Explore branches
Make a related alternative while keeping its parent available.
Hear the track
Take the idea to Perform and Pattern and refine it in context.
Make it yours
Apply the chosen four-pattern bank and sound to normal operation.
Give the idea something to play against.
Put CreakBox on an instrument track and loop a useful part of your song: a kick, a drum groove, a chord bed, or simply a few bars of space. Start at a comfortable listening level. A bassline that sounds spectacular on its own may need fewer notes, less resonance or a shorter tail once the track comes in.
For normal pattern audition, use INPUT: PTN and SRC: INT. In SYNC: HOST, start your DAW transport; its tempo drives the pattern. In SYNC: FREE, CreakBox uses its own BPM setting and Space starts or stops its free clock while the editor has keyboard focus. FREE sync is a clock mode, separate from the product's free/licensed status.
Open IDEA with the left-hand page button. An empty tree reads <none>. Entering the workspace starts an idea audition context; creating or selecting an idea lets you hear its patterns and sound. Generation itself does not start the DAW transport.
Save a starting point. Save your DAW project before exploring. IDEA keeps an outside scene for returning from an audition, and its tree keeps alternatives, but those serve different purposes. USE IDEA deliberately replaces the outside patterns and sound. Closing the plug-in window is not a command to cancel an audition.
One idea. Four patterns. One sound.
Each tree entry contains four CB-BASS patterns and a shared creative sound snapshot. Select P1, P2, P3 or P4 to hear its patterns through that same sound. These are four related pattern slots; IDEA does not automatically arrange them into a four-part song.
Direction, then action.
The Notes, Groove and Sound controls describe what the next NEW IDEA or DEVELOP should aim for. Turning them does not rewrite the current phrase or act as a live filter sweep. Create or develop an idea to hear that direction take effect.
Start fresh, or start with your own playing.
NEW IDEA
Choose a root and scale, set a musical direction, and click NEW IDEA. CreakBox creates a new root entry in the tree with four related bass patterns and a generated sound. P1 is selected first for audition.
Every new root gives you another starting point. The previous ideas remain available in the tree. You can also press I while the editor has focus: it opens IDEA and generates a new root. Clicking the IDEA page button alone only opens the workspace.
FROM SYNTH
Already have a bassline you like? Select the runtime pattern you want to capture, then open IDEA and click FROM SYNTH. The pattern playing outside the IDEA preview becomes P1 unchanged; P2–P4 are derived as close articulation variants. The captured runtime sound is retained.
This imports the outside scene held when the audition began. It does not capture a different tree entry you are currently previewing. FROM SYNTH ignores generation targets and locks during import. Use DEVELOP afterwards to explore that captured material.
A useful first pass
- Choose the key. Set ROOT to your song's tonic and SCALE to a suitable collection. Minor Pentatonic is a compact starting point; Dorian gives a different colour; Chromatic opens all twelve pitch classes.
- Choose a style. Click JACK, DRIVE, FLOW or FREAK's SET button. It moves the generator controls to that profile's targets while keeping your root, scale and register. Both SET and NUDGE choose FILTER MODEL: ANY, so change it back to CURRENT if you want to keep your present filter.
- Make room for the track. Try a moderate NOTE DENSITY, a modest note VARIATION and a manageable RANGE. Leave room for the kick and for the phrase to breathe.
- Click NEW IDEA. Let it loop before judging it. Listen for a rhythmic shape or a short pitch gesture worth keeping, then use the locks to preserve it.
- Audition P1–P4. Use the pattern buttons on Perform or Pattern while TEST IDEA or Lock Mode carries the audition there, or press 1–4 in the editor. Evaluate the quieter variations as well as the most dramatic one.
For NEW IDEA, P1 and the shared sound are generated independently of DEVELOP AMOUNT. The knob then sets how far each subsequent pattern develops from the preceding one: P1 → P2 → P3 → P4. At 0%, those later slots copy their parent subject to any destination locks.
Keep the detail that makes you lean in.
Perhaps the second note is perfect, the gate rhythm already sits around the kick, or the filter sound needs no further movement. A lock tells the generator to preserve that value while it explores the rest. You can protect a whole category, a pattern lane, one complete step or one setting within a step.
Click LOCK on the IDEA page to enter Lock Mode. The button turns red. On Perform and Pattern, the upper IDEA button reads LOCK in red and small lock dots appear on eligible controls. Click that upper LOCK button to leave Lock Mode; the left-hand IDEA page button returns you to the workspace.
Locks work while Lock Mode is ON. Turning Lock Mode off keeps your configured locks but NEW IDEA and DEVELOP ignore them. A lit global button or an entry in Active Locks tells you what is configured; also check that the mode itself is on before generating. Locks protect against generation. You can still make deliberate manual edits outside the small lock hotspots.
The four Global Locks
| Global switch | What it preserves during generation |
|---|---|
| PATTERN | All four bass patterns, including pitch, gate/rest/tie, accent, slide and Attack. Choose this when the composition works and you want to explore its sound. It does not lock the sound controls. |
| SOUND | The bass voice's creative sound controls, including waveform, filter selection, cutoff, resonance, envelope, accent strength and sub-oscillator settings. Choose this to explore notes and articulation through a familiar voice. Echo/reverb and distortion/tape have separate group locks. |
| ECHO/VERB | The echo controls and all six public reverb controls: on/off, dry/wet, Decay, Size, Pre-delay and Low-cut. SPACE cannot change protected echo/reverb settings. Echo and reverb are parallel effects. |
| DIST/TAPE | Distortion on/off, type, amount and tone, together with tape drive/hysteresis settings. Use it when the dirt and compression already belong to the track. |
Click a global switch again to remove that group lock. Individual locks stay configured. A global group can protect a setting even when its individual dot is green: the dot indicates its own explicit lock, while the group protection is shown by the global switch and Active Locks.
Lock a sound control on Perform
With Lock Mode on, open PERFORM. Click the small dot on an eligible knob or selector: green means individually unlocked; red means individually locked. Click again to release it. For example, lock Cutoff and Resonance to keep the filter's central character while allowing envelope, pattern and effects exploration.
The dot is its own target. Drag elsewhere on the knob to make a manual adjustment. Quick controls can show a lock for their currently assigned parameter when it is an eligible creative sound parameter. That lock belongs to the underlying parameter, not to the Quick slot number. Circuit calibration values are not randomized by IDEA.
Lock a pattern at exactly the right level
Open PATTERN and select the pattern slot you want to protect. The local locks refer to that particular slot: a P1 lock does not automatically become the same lock in P2, P3 or P4.
- One property on one step: click the small dot in that step's PITCH, GATE, ACCENT, SLIDE or ATTACK cell. You might keep Step 2's pitch while allowing its accent or slide to develop.
- One whole step: click the dot beside the step number. It groups that step's pitch, gate, accent, slide and Attack locks.
- One whole lane: click the dot beside PITCH, GATE, ACCENT, SLIDE or ATTACK at the left. It groups that lane's locks across all sixteen stored steps in the selected pattern.
- All four patterns: return to IDEA and use the PATTERN Global Lock.
A step or lane group turns fully red when every member is explicitly locked. Clicking an incompletely locked group locks all its members; clicking a fully locked group releases them. Individual cells show the precise protection.
Read and tidy Active Locks
The right-hand display separates GLOBAL LOCKS from LOCAL LOCKS. Entries such as P1 / Gate Lane or P1 / Step 2 / Pitch identify exactly what is configured. Click a lock entry to select it. Right-click an entry and choose Delete to remove that protection. Removing a global entry also switches off its matching global button. Headings and <none> rows are informational.
Locks are shared across the IDEA workspace. Selecting a different branch recalls its music and sound, while your current lock configuration remains in place. A lock protects the value in the current working idea during generation; it is not a stored reference value that gets pasted over every branch.
Follow a variation without losing its parent.
Select an idea in the left-hand tree. Decide what should remain fixed, enable the appropriate locks, and set DEVELOP AMOUNT with the large knob below DEVELOP. Click DEVELOP to create and audition a child branch. Its parent stays in the tree, ready for comparison or another direction.
Low amounts make smaller movements; higher amounts permit more change. As a practical starting point, try 15–30% for a restrained alternative, around 50% for a more obvious development, or a higher setting when you want a wider departure. These are creative suggestions, not fixed musical guarantees. At 0%, DEVELOP makes no change and creates no new development.
DEVELOP first develops P1 from the selected idea, then builds P2 from finalized P1, P3 from finalized P2 and P4 from finalized P3. Each hop uses the same amount and respects the destination slot's locks. Those later hops change patterns only. All four patterns share the resulting sound.
Two kinds of family. The tree stores alternate ideas and their parent/child relationships. Inside every tree entry, P1–P4 hold four related performance patterns. Developing a tree branch creates a new four-pattern bank; it is not simply a request to select P2.
Compare siblings, then go deeper
Click the parent again and develop it with another amount or direction to create a sibling. Click a child and develop from there to go further down that path. Give each version a few loops against the track. A convincing bassline often comes from comparing a promising parent with one small change rather than generating indefinitely.
Click any tree row to recall its saved patterns and sound immediately. With the tree focused, ↑ and ↓ move through the displayed tree and audition as they move; hold the key to continue. ← selects the parent when one exists. The tree scrolls to keep the selection visible. Enter has no action here: selection already auditions the idea.
Manual sound and pattern edits made during an active audition are stored with the selected branch. Selecting another node preserves those edits in the node you leave. If you want the unedited version as a comparison point, keep a parent and experiment on a developed child.
Keep favourites. Clear room for the next discovery.
The IDEA tree is also your shortlist. Mark the versions you want to return to, remove an unsuccessful idea, or clear the exploration history while keeping your favourites. You can favourite a root idea or any developed child.
- Make a favourite: right-click the idea's row and choose ADD TO FAVORITES. The entry gains a favourite mark. To remove that mark, right-click it again and choose REMOVE FROM FAVORITES. Mark several candidates before a listening comparison or a cleanup.
- Delete an individual idea: right-click its row and choose Delete, or click the row to focus the tree and press Delete. Read the confirmation, then choose YES to remove it, or NO/CANCEL to keep it. If the entry has no children, only that idea is removed. If it has developed children, deletion removes the entire branch and all descendants, including any favourites inside that branch.
- Delete everything except favourites: right-click a tree row or empty space in the tree and choose Delete all - keep favourites, then confirm YES. Every non-favourite entry is removed. Favourite entries survive even when their non-favourite parents are removed; they reconnect to the nearest surviving parent, or become roots if no parent remains. Mark any parents you also want to keep before running this command. With no favourites marked, it clears the whole tree.
Choose the cleanup command that matches your intention. A favourite mark protects an entry during Delete all - keep favourites; it does not protect it from an explicit branch deletion. Deletion cannot be undone in the IDEA tree. Save the DAW project before a large cleanup if you want a recoverable earlier version.
A favourite remains editable: the mark does not freeze its sound or patterns and is not a generation lock. Use Lock Mode to preserve musical values during development, and save the project to retain the workspace.
Take it out of the browser. Put it in the track.
Click TEST IDEA to enable testing. CreakBox takes you to PERFORM and keeps the selected idea active across pages. You can hear the idea in your arrangement, choose its four patterns, adjust its sound and edit its notes. These creative edits belong to the selected IDEA branch.
Testing uses the internal pattern audition, so an external audio source or MIDI-input setup is not the route being auditioned. Keep the DAW loop running in HOST sync. Listen with the kick first, then bring in the rest of the track. Try the bass quietly as well as loudly: a useful line should still make musical sense without dominating everything around it.
A musical listening pass
Compare P1–P4. Does the phrase answer the drums? Are the slides pulling towards useful notes? Does the last step lead naturally back to the first? If the rhythm works but the notes feel busy, keep the gates locked and lower the pitch variety before developing again.
A sound listening pass
Set Cutoff and ENV for the track's available space, then listen to Resonance and Accent together. Check the attack of the kick against the bass, and the length of the echo and reverb tails. Return to IDEA to lock what now works and develop the remaining details.
What the Perform controls contribute
WAVEFORM chooses the oscillator shape; FILTER chooses FLT1–FLT4; SUB OSC selects the sub-oscillator mode. TUNING changes oscillator tuning. CUTOFF sets the filter opening, RESONANCE emphasizes its resonant response, ENV sets filter-envelope modulation, DECAY sets its decay, and ACCENT controls accent strength. ATTACK sets the separate filter-modulation opening time for Attack-marked pattern notes; it is not a volume fade. DISTORTION controls distortion amount and LEVEL sets the bass level.
TAPE ECHO has an on/off button, a timing SYNC selector, TIME, FEEDBACK, HP, DUCK, WOW, FLUTTER, SPREAD and DRY/WET. Use TIME and SYNC for rhythmic placement, FEEDBACK for repeats, HP to thin the delayed low end, DUCK to make space around the dry signal, WOW/FLUTTER for modulation, SPREAD for width and DRY/WET for echo level.
REVERB has on/off, DECAY, SIZE, PRE-DL, LO-CUT and DRY/WET. DECAY shapes the tank's decay behaviour; SIZE changes its space and density; PRE-DL separates the tail from the note; LO-CUT removes low frequencies from the reverb path. The artwork's short decay label appears as DELAY in these screenshots; this control is reverb Decay, while PRE-DL is Pre-delay. The audible tail also depends on Size and diffusion, so it need not end at the displayed Decay time.
TAPE has on/off, HYST. and DRIVE for tape character. The DISTORTION section has on/off, the DIST1–DIST4 type buttons and FILTER for distortion tone. MAIN provides WORN for bounded component-wear character, SUBOSC for sub level and HP for the output bass trim. The eight QUICK knobs address their current assignments, which depend on your configuration and filter bank; the screenshot captions are examples. Quick editing and Circuit Bend require an active licence.
Tooltip toggles the interface help. KILL sends a one-shot panic command to silence sounding voices and effect tails; it does not change the patterns, parameter settings or DAW transport. On eligible live sound knobs, holding Ctrl before a drag can throw the knob into momentum on release; click the moving knob to take control again. Generation knobs on IDEA have no momentum. For deliberate audition comparisons, a settled sound is often easier to judge.
Pattern tools for refining the audition
With TEST IDEA or Lock Mode active, open PATTERN to edit the selected branch. Click 1–4 to select its slots. Changes to a playing pattern selection normally take effect at a valid pattern boundary.
PITCH −/+ moves one note by a semitone; Shift-click moves an octave. Drag the note vertically to change pitch within C1–C5. GATE chooses a note or rest, ACCENT marks an accent, SLIDE connects eligible adjacent notes, and ATTACK marks a note to restart the filter-modulation opening slew. That Attack restarts on every marked repetition, including a marked Slide destination; it does not fade the VCA.
The length −/+ buttons change the loop endpoint from 1 to 16 steps. Click the length readout to choose a length. Shortening the loop keeps later steps stored; lengthening it makes those stored steps playable again. For a musical continuation of a short phrase, follow From 8 to 16 steps below. TRANSPOSE −/+ moves all sixteen stored notes down/up a semitone, or an octave with Shift-click, clamped to C1–C5. ROTATE </> moves the phrase one step left/right with wraparound at the loop length.
PTN Copy copies the selected pattern; PTN Paste overwrites the destination slot with the copied pattern and its length. CLEAN resets all sixteen stored steps to plain C2 notes with gates on and accent, slide, Attack and ties off, while keeping the loop length. RANDOMIZE rewrites the selected pattern with a complete new phrase. Manual tools can change values you have locked against generation; copy or save material you want to keep.
PTN SAVE saves the four-pattern CB-BASS bank as a .cbbp file. PTN LOAD replaces the bank from such a file. A pattern-bank file is separate from the full sound and IDEA tree saved in your DAW project. FROM AUDIO opens WAV pattern detection for the selected slot and requires an active licence; its shortcut is L on PATTERN. It is a separate import route from IDEA's FROM SYNTH.
Understand when the outside scene returns
| Your action | What happens |
|---|---|
| Stay on IDEA | The current idea remains auditioned. Switching TEST IDEA off here keeps the current idea, pattern slot and sound active on this page. |
| Leave with TEST on | The idea stays active on the other pages. Creative sound and pattern edits belong to the selected branch. |
| Leave with Lock Mode on | The idea also stays active across pages, even if TEST is off, so you can inspect and set its locks. |
| Leave with both off | The pre-audition outside patterns, sound and input selection return, unless you have committed with USE IDEA. Your idea remains in the tree. |
| Confirm USE IDEA | The chosen bank and sound become the normal runtime. Leaving IDEA no longer restores the former outside scene. |
To compare against your original setup, return to IDEA, switch TEST IDEA off, switch Lock Mode off, and open PERFORM. To hear the candidate again, return to IDEA and select its entry. Turning Lock Mode off to make this comparison preserves the configured locks; turn it on again before the next protected development.
Choose the version. Make it the instrument.
When an idea feels right in the track, return to IDEA and select the exact root or developed branch you want. Check all four pattern slots and the shared sound. Click USE IDEA.
The confirmation asks whether to replace all current runtime CB-BASS patterns and sound settings. This is the commitment step: it replaces the full four-pattern bank and sound, even if you have only been listening to one slot.
- YES / Y: apply the selected idea's four patterns and sound. The previous outside restore point is discarded; leaving IDEA keeps the applied result.
- NO / N: keep the outside runtime unchanged. The current audition can still be active until you leave with TEST and Lock Mode both off.
- CANCEL / Escape: close the confirmation without applying the idea. Enter does not confirm this dialog.
Locks govern generation; they do not protect parts of the old outside setup from USE IDEA's bank-and-sound replacement. If you want to retain something from that setup, bring it into the candidate and check it before confirming.
After applying, turn Lock Mode off if it is still on and return to PERFORM or PATTERN. Choose P1–P4 as your arrangement needs them, automate the public controls in your DAW, and record or render the result using your normal project workflow. USE IDEA does not create an audio file, MIDI clip or arrangement automatically.
Save the DAW project. It retains the plug-in state, including the IDEA workspace and current settings. Optionally use PTN SAVE for a separate reusable pattern bank. Favourite marks help navigation inside IDEA; they do not create an external backup. Closing and reopening the editor preserves the currently audible state, so use the page-navigation comparison process when you intend to restore the outside scene.
Ready to put the workflow into practice? Return to the CreakBox page for the download, sound demos and available editions.
Tell IDEA what you want to discover.
The IDEA page has 15 knobs and 4 selectors. They set generation preferences saved with the project. Recalling a tree branch restores its music and sound; these preferences remain your current direction for the next action. Locks take priority while Lock Mode is active.
How to adjust the controls
Drag a knob vertically: up increases, down decreases. Hold Shift for finer movement. The mouse wheel also adjusts knobs. Right-click a continuous knob for numeric entry; on IDEA these entries use 0–100% knob position, even when the normal readout shows notes, semitones or a register note. For example, 50% RANGE displays 9 ST. Press Enter to finish an entry. Double-click the knob to return to its current reset target.
Click ROOT, SCALE, SLIDE DIRECTION or FILTER MODEL to open its choice menu. Watch the readouts as you work: note VARIATION displays a note count, RANGE displays semitones, REGISTER displays a note name, and the other knobs display percentages. IDEA's generator knobs do not have the momentum behaviour of eligible live sound knobs.
Notes / Choose the pitch world
| Control | Meaning and musical use |
|---|---|
| ROOT | Choose C, C♯, D, D♯, E, F, F♯, G, G♯, A, A♯ or B as the tonic of SCALE. This is the generation key, not oscillator tuning. SCALE: OFF/Random ignores ROOT. Locked notes can remain outside a newly chosen key. |
| SCALE | Choose OFF/Random, Major, Natural Minor, Dorian, Phrygian, Mixolydian, Harmonic Minor, Major Pentatonic, Minor Pentatonic, Blues or Chromatic. OFF/Random removes scale and tonic constraints while retaining variety, range, register and locks. Chromatic supplies all twelve pitch classes. Selecting a scale does not transpose the current phrase. |
| VARIATION (Notes) | The number of scale degrees available to the melody, shown as a count such as 3 NOTES. Its range is one degree up to the selected scale's available pitch classes. This is a palette size, not a promise that every note will appear, and it does not control note density. Octave versions of one pitch class do not add another scale degree. |
| RANGE | The target pitch span around REGISTER: from 2 to 24 semitones. At 50% travel it is 9 semitones. A phrase can use less than the full span, and the available interval may shift to find scale tones. NEW uses the target directly; DEVELOP approaches pitch targets according to its amount. |
| CHR.SPICE | Adds occasional semitone neighbours outside a non-chromatic scale, especially on weaker steps. 0% disables this extra spice; 100% increases its likelihood rather than making every note chromatic. Chromatic already contains every pitch class. Pitch locks remain authoritative. |
| REGISTER | The target centre of the generated melody, displayed from C1 to C5. RANGE spreads the notes around that centre within the supported C1–C5 bounds. This moves generated note pitches, not oscillator tuning. Low DEVELOP amounts can approach the register gradually; locked pitches stay where they are. |
Groove / Decide where the phrase breathes
| Control | Meaning and musical use |
|---|---|
| SLIDE DIRECTION | ANY permits up, down and repeated-pitch transitions. UP requires the following note to be higher; DOWN requires it to be lower. The final-to-first transition at the loop edge counts too. A slide needs eligible connected sounding steps; rests, direction and locks can limit the result. |
| SLIDE DENSITY | The target share of eligible transitions receiving slides in P1. Later slots develop that distribution. 0% removes every unlocked slide across all four generated patterns. At higher settings, low DEVELOP amounts move towards the target gradually. A requested density cannot create an eligible connection where none exists. |
| SLIDE CHAINS | Arranges the chosen slides. Low values tend to separate them; high values favour consecutive chains. It does not increase the target slide count or set a fixed chain length. With 0% slide density, it has no unlocked slides to arrange. |
| ACCENT DENSITY | The target share of sounding steps accented in P1. 0% requests no accents; 100% requests accents on every eligible sounding step. New accents need non-rest, non-tied steps. Low DEVELOP approaches the target gradually and locks may limit it. This controls placement; the live ACCENT knob controls strength. |
| ACCENT CHAINS | Arranges the accents chosen by ACCENT DENSITY. Low values favour separation; high values favour neighbouring accents. It does not add accents or specify a fixed chain length. There must be eligible accents to group. |
| NOTE DENSITY | The rounded note-start target for P1 over the actual loop length. In 16 steps, 0% gives zero starts, 50% gives eight and 100% gives sixteen, when locks do not constrain the result. Editable ties are cleared. P2–P4 inherit the distribution unless destination locks retain different gates. This is not gate duration or pitch variety. DEVELOP at 0% remains unchanged. |
For one note on every step with no slides: set NOTE DENSITY to 100% and SLIDE DENSITY to 0%, then generate or develop with enough amount to apply the change. Check for any locked gates or slides first. To keep the existing rhythm and change only pitches, lock the Gate lane in each relevant pattern.
Sound / Set character without turning live knobs
| Control | Meaning and musical use |
|---|---|
| FILTER MODEL | CURRENT retains the present filter during generation. FLT1–FLT4 explicitly request that model. ANY allows a random model choice; it does not guarantee a different model on every click. An explicit model can change even at low SOUND VARIATION. An individual filter lock or global SOUND lock prevents generator changes while Lock Mode is active. |
| VARIATION (Sound) | Controls sound-target spread for NEW and DEVELOP. For DEVELOP it also scales how far continuous sound values move towards those targets: SOUND VARIATION × DEVELOP AMOUNT. At 30% × 50%, that movement is 15%. Switches/model choices follow their own selection rules. At 0%, DEVELOP preserves continuous sound values, but an explicit filter choice remains separate. NEW can still set the macro targets at 0%; use sound locks when you need exact preservation. |
| BRIGHT | Biases the sound towards a more open cutoff and stronger filter-envelope modulation, and influences waveform and distortion-tone choices. It sets targets for generation. Turn CUTOFF or ENV on Perform for an immediate audible edit. |
| BITE | Biases resonance, accent strength and envelope modulation towards a sharper, more pronounced character. It does not decide which steps receive accents; use ACCENT DENSITY for placement. |
| DRIVE | Biases distortion targets towards more drive, within moderate, model-dependent generated ranges. 100% here is a strong direction, not a promise that the live distortion knob reaches its maximum. 0% requests a clean distortion target. NEW can set distortion on/off directly; DEVELOP approaches its target, so 0% is not an immediate bypass command. DIST/TAPE locks take priority. |
| SPACE | Shapes parallel echo and reverb targets: echo wet level, feedback, spread and time, plus reverb wet level, Decay, Size, Pre-delay and Low-cut. 0% requests both effects off. NEW can set their on/off states directly; DEVELOP approaches targets according to its sound amount. SPACE does not change tempo, gate length or slide timing. ECHO/VERB or individual locks preserve protected settings. |
Develop / Set the distance
DEVELOP AMOUNT is the large SUBTLE–STRONG knob below DEVELOP. It controls the distance from the selected idea for the next development. Zero means no development. Higher values allow more pitch and articulation movement; the sound also depends on SOUND VARIATION. Density targets, explicit 0% slides and locks are separate constraints, so a small development amount does not mean every aspect changes by exactly that percentage.
For NEW IDEA, the knob affects the pattern-only P1→P2→P3→P4 development chain rather than the initial P1 or sound. It also sets the amount used by the R current-pattern development shortcut on Perform and Pattern when Lock Mode is off.
Style buttons / A direction in one click
JACK
“Syncopated grooves with a rubbery bounce.” A compact palette, room between notes and moderate slides provide a useful starting direction for a bouncing phrase.
DRIVE
“Hypnotic repetition with a hard-edged pulse.” A dense note-start target, smaller pitch palette and strong bite/drive targets point towards a focused, insistent line.
FLOW
“Melodic phrases connected by liquid slides.” A wider palette, more connected slides and the highest SPACE target encourage a more fluid direction.
FREAK
“Unexpected turns around a recognizable hook.” A broad range, more chromatic spice and strong sound variation invite less predictable alternatives.
Each style has two buttons. SET writes that profile's targets into the generation controls. NUDGE moves numeric settings 25% of the remaining distance towards its targets; note counts and semitone ranges move in whole steps. Repeat NUDGE to move closer, or nudge towards another profile to combine directions.
Both actions set FILTER MODEL to ANY. SET sets SLIDE DIRECTION to ANY; NUDGE preserves your existing slide-direction choice. Both keep ROOT, SCALE, REGISTER, DEVELOP AMOUNT and locks. They change generation settings without rewriting the playing patterns, sound or tree. Their brief illumination is click feedback, not a persistent “current preset” indicator. Click NEW IDEA or DEVELOP to hear the new direction.
Exact SET targets for JACK, DRIVE, FLOW and FREAK
Percentages below refer to generation settings. Note VARIATION counts are limited by the number of pitch classes in your chosen scale. ROOT, SCALE, REGISTER and DEVELOP AMOUNT keep their current values.

Move quickly. Stay in the right context.
Click inside the CreakBox editor so it receives keyboard input. The main action shortcuts are suspended while a text field or modal dialog owns input, and Ctrl/Alt/Windows-key combinations are left to their other functions. Single-press actions do not repeat while held; the tree's navigation keys do.
| Key / gesture | Action and context |
|---|---|
| I | Open IDEA and generate a NEW IDEA using the current generation settings and effective locks. This generates; it is not just a page-navigation shortcut. |
| 1–4 | Select CB-BASS pattern P1–P4. Top-row digits and numpad digits are accepted when reported as digits. No Shift is needed. Pattern switching can wait for the next valid playback boundary. |
| R | On PERFORM or PATTERN with Lock Mode OFF, develop only the current bass-pattern slot by DEVELOP AMOUNT. Other slots and sound stay in place; no new tree child is created by this shortcut. It has no action on the IDEA page or while Lock Mode is ON. Because Lock Mode is off, configured locks are not enforced. Use the IDEA-page DEVELOP button for protected branch development. |
| Space | Start/stop CreakBox's internal clock in SYNC: FREE. In SYNC: HOST, CreakBox leaves Space unconsumed for the DAW; the host decides its transport response. |
| ↑ / ↓ | With the IDEA tree focused, select and immediately audition the previous/next visible entry in displayed tree order. Key repeat continues navigation; the selection scrolls into view and stops at the ends. |
| ← | With the IDEA tree focused, select and audition the selected node's parent, when it has one. |
| Enter | No action in the IDEA tree. It does not develop or apply an idea. In a numeric text field, Enter finishes the entry. |
| Delete | With the IDEA tree focused, open the confirmation to delete the selected branch and its descendants. Held-key repeats do not issue repeated deletion requests. |
| Y / N / Esc | In USE IDEA and branch-deletion confirmations: YES, NO or CANCEL. Enter is not a confirmation key. Check which question is open before pressing Y. |
| Shift + drag | Fine-adjust a knob at one fifth of normal drag sensitivity. On IDEA this changes the next generation's direction. |
| Right-click a knob | Open numeric entry for a continuous knob. IDEA uses a 0–100% position entry even for note-count, range and register readouts. |
| Double-click a knob | Reset it to its current reset target. In Lock Mode, use the knob body outside the small lock hotspot for ordinary knob gestures. |
| Mouse wheel | Adjust a knob under the pointer, or scroll the idea tree/Active Locks display. Scrollbars also allow direct movement through long lists. |
| Right-click a tree row | Open favourite and deletion commands. Right-click empty tree space for Delete all - keep favourites. |
| Right-click a lock entry | Choose Delete to remove that lock from Active Locks. |
| Shift + click −/+ | On PATTERN pitch controls and TRANSPOSE −/+, move one octave instead of one semitone. Pitch remains within C1–C5. |
| L on PATTERN | Open FROM AUDIO's WAV pattern import. This requires an active licence and is separate from FROM SYNTH. |
| Ctrl + drag | On eligible live sound knobs, hold Ctrl before mouse-down to measure a momentum throw; release the mouse while Ctrl is held or within one second of releasing it. Click the moving knob to take control again. IDEA's generator knobs do not throw. |
Page navigation and Circuit Bend keyboard context
The left-hand PERFORM, PATTERN, IDEA, CIRCUIT BEND, MONITOR and LICENSE buttons open their named pages. MONITOR lets you inspect output without editing the sound. LICENSE opens activation/status information. Circuit Bend opens detailed parameters when licensed; without Circuit access it takes you to licensing. Opening a page does not itself load another circuit configuration.
On CIRCUIT BEND, L loads a configuration and S saves one. ←/→ select the previous/next category, ↑/↓ select the previous/next parameter page, and Esc returns to Perform. These meanings apply to Circuit Bend, rather than the focused IDEA tree. Circuit edits are outside the IDEA generator's randomized creative controls.
To test the same idea while visiting other pages, keep TEST IDEA or Lock Mode on. To return to the pre-audition outside scene, turn both off and leave IDEA before committing with USE IDEA.
Four ways to find the next good turn.
“Keep my rhythm. Give it new notes.”
Capture the groove with FROM SYNTH. Enable Lock Mode and lock the Gate lane in P1, then do the same in any other slots whose rhythms must stay fixed. Leave pitch unlocked. Set the song's root and scale, keep RANGE fairly narrow and use a restrained DEVELOP AMOUNT. Develop, compare the child with its parent, and lock the pitches that begin to feel like a hook.
“The line works. Find a sound for it.”
Select the idea, enable Lock Mode and switch on the PATTERN Global Lock. Choose FILTER MODEL: CURRENT to explore within the current filter, or an explicit FLT model for a deliberate change. Raise BRIGHT or BITE a little, set a useful SOUND VARIATION and develop. Keep an ear on level as the tone changes. When the voice lands, lock SOUND and explore SPACE separately.
“Make a version for the next section.”
Mark the current idea as a favourite. Develop a child with a little more accent grouping or slide density, keeping the defining notes locked. TEST the result over the section it is intended for. Reduce tails if they obscure the transition. Compare all four patterns and keep the variation that adds energy without breaking the part's identity.
“Turn my eight-step loop into a sixteen-step phrase.”
A short loop can be a strong opening for a longer bassline. Bring it into IDEA, extend the auditioned pattern, and let DEVELOP help shape the continuation. Use a low amount for a gentle variation, or lock the original eight steps when their stored notes and articulation must stay fixed. Methods A and B below are alternatives: choose either approach after the initial setup. To compare both, select the same lengthened parent again before trying the other method.
- Capture the eight-step starting point. In the normal runtime, select the eight-step pattern you want to extend. Save the project or use PTN SAVE if you want a separate copy of the original bank. Open IDEA and click FROM SYNTH. The captured runtime pattern becomes P1 unchanged. If you are already auditioning another idea, first return to the outside scene with TEST and Lock Mode off before starting this import.
- Test and lengthen P1. Click TEST IDEA, then open PATTERN and select P1. Use the length + button, or click the length readout, to change the loop from 8 to 16. The edit belongs to the selected idea. Listen to steps 9–16: lengthening reveals their previously stored values rather than generating a continuation by itself. You can edit those steps into a useful starting shape before developing.
- Choose a musical direction. Return to IDEA with TEST still on. Set ROOT, SCALE, REGISTER and RANGE to suit the phrase; FROM SYNTH did not automatically retarget these generation preferences. Set NOTE DENSITY for the number of note starts you want across the full sixteen steps, and choose suitable slide and accent targets.
- Method A — develop gently. Set a low, non-zero DEVELOP AMOUNT, for example 10–20%, and click DEVELOP. Audition the child against its parent and try another development if needed. A low amount restrains pitch and articulation movement, but it does not guarantee that steps 1–8 remain unchanged; note-density targets can also change unlocked gates. Use Method B when the beginning must be preserved precisely.
- Method B — protect the first half. Before developing, enable Lock Mode, open PATTERN and select P1. Click the whole-step lock dot beside each step number from 1 through 8 until all eight step-group dots are red. This locks pitch, gate, accent, slide and Attack for those steps. Keep 9–16 unlocked, and leave the global PATTERN lock off so the continuation can change. If you also want the tone and effects held fixed, enable SOUND, ECHO/VERB and DIST/TAPE as appropriate.
- Develop the unlocked continuation. Return to IDEA, keep Lock Mode on, choose a non-zero DEVELOP AMOUNT and click DEVELOP. The child retains P1's protected first eight step values while the unlocked second half can develop. Raise the amount if you want a more adventurous continuation, or compare several children from the same parent. Extending the loop changes the transition after step 8: it now leads to step 9 rather than directly back to step 1.
- Check the family and keep the result. DEVELOP also builds related P2–P4 patterns from P1. P1's local locks do not automatically lock those other slots: set their corresponding first-eight-step locks too if their own beginnings must remain fixed. TEST the full sixteen-step phrase in the track, mark the successful branch as a favourite, then choose USE IDEA → YES to apply its four-pattern bank and sound. Save the DAW project.
Start with P1 for this workflow. FROM SYNTH puts the captured source there, and DEVELOP builds the later pattern slots from the finalized P1. If the second half stays silent, check its gates, NOTE DENSITY and any local or global locks before increasing the amount.
These are starting methods, not recipes the generator follows automatically. The useful moment is often a small detail you recognise, lock and build around.
Read the setting behind the behaviour.
| What you notice | What to check |
|---|---|
| I turned a generation knob and nothing changed. | That is expected: it sets the next NEW IDEA or DEVELOP. Use a Perform sound knob for an immediate edit. |
| DEVELOP does nothing. | Check DEVELOP AMOUNT is above 0%. Check Lock Mode and the active locks; there may be no allowed change. Zero SOUND VARIATION also preserves continuous sound values during DEVELOP. CreakBox does not add a redundant branch when the result is unchanged. |
| My configured locks were ignored. | Enable Lock Mode before NEW IDEA or DEVELOP. FROM SYNTH imports without applying generation locks, manual tools can edit locked material, and USE IDEA commits the chosen bank and sound. |
| A green dot still seems protected. | Check the relevant Global Lock. A group can protect the parameter while its individual dot remains green. Also check complete-step and lane locks in the pattern. |
| There are fewer slides than requested. | Slides require eligible adjacent sounding notes. Direction, rests, ties, low development amounts and locks can restrict the available transitions. ANY also permits same-pitch connections. |
| The scale or range seems imperfect. | Check locked pitches, CHR.SPICE and DEVELOP AMOUNT. Locks can retain older pitches, spice permits outside-scale neighbours, and a restrained development can approach new pitch targets gradually. |
| The generated pattern is silent. | Check transport, pattern/input routing, source, gates, level and NOTE DENSITY. A 0% target can intentionally create no note starts. In the free product, FLT2–FLT4 also have demo/render restrictions; use FLT1 for the free rendering path or an active licence for the full filter workflow. |
| The old sound comes back on Perform. | Leaving IDEA with TEST and Lock Mode both off restores the pre-audition outside scene until USE IDEA is confirmed. Enable TEST to refine the candidate across pages, or USE it when ready. |
| The idea keeps playing after TEST is off. | On IDEA, the audition remains active. Lock Mode also carries it across pages. To restore the outside scene, turn both off and leave IDEA before committing. |
| FROM SYNTH brought in an earlier sound. | It captures the outside runtime held when you entered the audition. It does not import the currently selected tree preview. Return to the outside scene, make your runtime edits there, then enter a fresh audition and import. |
| A style button changed my filter preference. | Both SET and NUDGE choose ANY for future generation. Select CURRENT afterwards if you want to retain the current filter, or lock the filter/SOUND group with Lock Mode on. |
| I extended 8 steps to 16, but the continuation needs work. | Increasing length reveals the stored later steps; it does not generate new music by itself. Use FROM SYNTH, TEST IDEA and a longer P1, then DEVELOP with a low amount or lock steps 1–8 and develop the unlocked second half. Check NOTE DENSITY and gates if the added half remains silent. See the complete extension workflow. |
| I want to clear the tree without losing favourites. | Mark the entries you want to keep, then use Delete all - keep favourites. An individual branch's Delete command also removes its descendants, including favourites; it is a different cleanup operation. See favourites and cleanup. |
| The keyboard is controlling the DAW. | Click inside the CreakBox editor. The host must deliver the keys to the plug-in. Text fields and modal dialogs retain input; HOST-sync Space is deliberately left for the DAW. |
| I need this idea in another project. | Save the current DAW project or the host's full plug-in preset/state using its normal facilities. PTN SAVE exports the four-pattern bank separately; it is not a sound-and-tree export. USE IDEA applies the idea inside this instance. |
Keep the moment.
Build the bassline around it.
Start with something that catches your ear. Protect what matters, give the rest a direction, and compare it in the track. When the line feels like part of the music, USE IDEA and carry on making the record.
